STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

In Scoil Mhuire, our pupils have participated in a number of exciting STEM projects.

STEM Projects combine learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

They develop in our pupils the 21st century skills required for achieving in our world today.

Through the projects children also develop skills in collaboration, innovation, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, initiative, and leadership.

Some of the recent STEM projects include:

  • Lego Mindstorm
  • Yacht building
  • Building Bridges
  • Cool Catapults

Lego Mindstorm

Pupils from Scoil Mhuire were fortunate enough to participate in the Peace by Piece Lego Mindstorm Peace IV Programme. This programme was based on a shared learning experience based on robotics technology for real life problem solving.

This programme was organised by Cavan Monaghan ETB, which brought primary and post primary schools in Monaghan and Armagh together to take part in a variety of workshops.

Pupils participated in workshops, which focussed on robotics and coding, centred on the theme of Space Exploration. It also involved individual research.

Some of the activities involved included:

  • Following instructions to build a robot using Lego
  • Using Bluetooth to connect the robot to a laptop
  • Using coding to instruct the robot
  • Using coding combined with sensors to further instruct the robot
  • Designing and constructing a Moon Base
  • Designing, constructing and automating robots to navigate the Moon Base

With much appreciation, our school was provided with WeDo 2.0 Lego Mindstorm equipment, including ten laptops, which will be of much benefit to our pupils for many years to come.

Engineer’s Week

In February/March each year our school celebrates Engineer’s Week. This year we received exciting Engineering Challenge kits from Monaghan County Library. We are very grateful for the STEM Kits received during Engineer’s week and Science week and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with their creations.
